Facilitate new-environment setup and hand learners into the MigrationRoom UI.
Timing
Budget 25-45 minutes as prework and open a staffed setup clinic. At the hard stop, move a blocked pair to a spare account rather than borrowing another pair's credential.
Talk track
Every pair uses make databricks-provision-workspace to create a new serverless
workspace. Walk learners through User management → Service principals → Add service
principal, then the Roles and Credentials & secrets tabs. The learner page's
screenshots distinguish the principal numeric ID from its UUID/client ID and show the
one-time OAuth secret.
Verify without seeing values that the principal is Account admin, the account ID came
from the account-console profile menu, the client ID is the principal UUID, and all
three values are only in untracked terraform.tfvars.
After make up-databricks, require healthy services and guide the self-signed
certificate exception only for exactly https://localhost. The readiness gate is the
dashboard itself: Databricks, migration_demo.tpch, the OLAP pack, six step cards,
and Databricks → ClickHouse Cloud must all be visible.
State the operating rule clearly: learners use the dashboard and chat for migration work. Terminal commands are reserved for provisioning, service startup, and teardown.
Common failures
- Terraform receives the principal numeric ID instead of the UUID/client ID.
- The service principal lacks Account admin or the OAuth secret was not copied.
- A new account has no Unity Catalog metastore; set
create_metastore = trueand retry. - The SQL warehouse/runtime token lacks access to
migration_demo.tpch. - A learner bypasses a certificate warning for a hostname other than localhost.
- The wrong source agent or an old conversation is active.
Reset steps
Use short-lived spare credentials delivered privately. Reconfirm the selected source, database, query pack, and agent label in the dashboard. Start a new conversation if old context refers to another source or target. A screenshot from the instructor can explain an unavailable UI, but it never proves a participant ran a step.
